Dale Schmidtberger

July 11,1957 – October 20, 2003

Dale Joseph Schmidtberger, 46, Overland Park, KS, died October 20, 2003, at his home after a courageous and dignified two year battle against Metastatic Melanoma. Dale was born July 11, 1957, in Hays, KS. He graduated from Bishop Miege High School and cum laude from the University of Kansas, with a degree in civil engineering.

Dale’s greatest pride was his loving family.  He was a devoted husband, father, brother, son and friend. His sons were between the ages of  6 to 17 when he  died. He was a great teacher to his children and set forth examples for his survivors to live by. He was always thinking of others and asking nothing in return. During his illness, he never once felt sorry for himself or asked, “Why me?” He simply kept looking for solutions with grace and dignity. He was overcome but he never quit. Dale is survived by his wife, Elaine O’Connell Schmidtberger, and his sons Keith (Katie) grandchildren Oliva and Luke, Kent (Courtney) grandchildren Brady Jean and baby to be July 2025, Kurt, and Kale.

Dale’s faith was very important to him. He was a parishioner of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where he was an integral member of the Athletic Association, Building Committee, and an usher for many years. He loved coaching his sons in CYO football, basketball, soccer, and in 3&2 Baseball. His spirit and energy were contagious and he touched many lives. His circle of friends was both huge and diverse. Everyone that was touched by Dale miss him terribly. He was loved beyond comparison.
